I think I'll be a Breton when I get the game. :3
How do they play, yay or nay? Can you alter the age of your character? Can I adopt a pet cow?

Bretons have permanent forehead wrinkles. You don't literally alter the age but you can add wrinkles and other old people features. Like Kupkake the Orc. The oldest orc ever. By Contrast, Krisrath is as fresh and young as a spring daisy On how they play, Bretons gain resistance to magic and are tiny and fragile. More suited to a sorcerer and to a less extent, a thief. Other than the permanent forehead wrinkles. They are a great race to play for the aspiring Mage College Frat Boy. As for befriending a cow. I don't know but it's a possibility. Also, Markarth is a very cool city. Minus all the Thalmor running around.

I got it and I got in! Imperial Apologist and I fled from the nightmarish dragon and frightful monsters. I spent an insanely long time looting anything not tied down. I ended up having to dump the fifty baskets and cups for better loot. After selling all the crap I had about 500 gold. I was told to go to...um...that town place. Naturally I got bored and went the other way, instead heading to Winterhold to prove my family wrong, that I could make it there. I was accepted and am now a leading soloist for the Roaring 20, the school's show choir. We're a shoe in for Regionals. Anyway, I have a few questions and figured I could ask them here rather than starting a new thread. Q1) I am lonely. Where's the closest and best follower, who is also the easiest to obtain. Everyone goes on about some housecarl chick. She any good? Also, I'd rather the follower doesn't die like they did in Fallout 3. Q2) "Mum, dad, need $$$ at college." Best way to earn some gold? Q3) Do I have to do these quests now? Like, I'm at the start of the college quest line, where I have to go talk to a professor and sleep with him to increase my grade or something. Anyway, after taking part in his class, can I just...leave? I know it starts a new quest where I have to meet his class at some mountain or cave, can that wait or will my peers be waiting there for weeks until I show? I mean, if I'm in attendance, do I have to be there until the quest lines finish or will time sop there till I get back? Q4) Best way to level up? I think I'm still only level 1. Q5) Best weapon? A Winterhold guard made fun of m for having a steel sword. Q6) Quick! I need a setlist for our upcoming competition against Bard's College! What songs? Q7) Do I have a limit to how many skill upgrades I can take?

A Winterhold guard made fun of m for having a steel sword. Q6) Quick! I need a setlist for our upcoming competition against Bard's College! What songs? Q7) Do I have a limit to how many skill upgrades I can take? #1) The housecarl you mentioned is the first follower you'll get, most likely. Her name is Lydia, and you get her in Whiterun from the Jarl after you do a couple of the main quests. She's not the best, however, as you'll find yourself hacking her up/blasting her with your spells instead of the measly bandit in front of you because she tends to jump in the way of your attacks. A lot. I don't like her personally because all the housecarls you can get in the game are total kiss-asses. The best follower you can get in the game, in my experience, is Aela the Huntress (shitload of health, doesn't actually die from what I've seen, uses a bow so no complications of killing her accidentally). The only way you can get her as a follower is to complete the Companions questline in Whiterun though, but the whole thing is easy and you can complete it in like two hours (plus the quests are really fun for one particular reason I don't want to spoil). You can also marry Aela, which is a bonus since yo character is so lonely (after you complete the questline and become Harbinger, go to Riften and hit up the Bee and Barb Inn. There's a priest in there that will sell you an Amulet of Mara for two hundred gold and then you can talk to Aela and arrange the marriage). #2) Level the shit out of your Smithing and Enchanting skills. Not only is the experience good for leveling up your character and hoarding skill points for other skills (assuming you're anything other than a warrior or a mage), the stuff you make is rather valuable and you can get a lot of money really quickly. #3) You can wait to do those quests as long as you'd like, they'll just stand outside the ruins for weeks or maybe even months until you finally come back, then they'll act like nothing ever happened. It's quite funny, really. XD #4) See #2. If you're a warrior then leveling smithing will help you out a lot, same with enchanting for a mage. You'll get a lot of skill points saved up and then you can level whatever you'd like with those. If your character is a thief then it's pretty much the same principle, but with all of them you'll have to actually level up the skills you'll be using before you can use those skill points (use one handed/destruction on random wolves and trolls, etc.). #5) Daedric is the single best type of weapon in the game. Thing is, it's rare. Extremely rare. I've never even seen any Daedric equipment in the game save for what I've made myself. You'll also need level 90 smithing (and the daedric crafting perk in the skill tree) to create it, so you better start on what I said in #2. You'll also need ebony ingots and daedra hearts to make the equipment, which are also rare. GET TAH' LOOTIN', YA GIT. #6) The Bard's College will win every single time because they study songs themselves instead of wasting time on your flashy spellcasting. Don't even bother, they will RAPE your robe-wearing asses. :awesome: #7) If you mean using a trainer to level up, you can only pay for five levels before you'll have to wait until you can level them up via a trainer again. If you just mean skill points in the skill trees themselves, I don't think there's a specific cutoff limit until your character reaches the highest level possible, but you'll have been done with the game long before that. So it's perfectly fine to hoard them for a while until you can level up whatever you want to level. A few more tips, just from what I've discovered through the game that will save you a lot of time. 1) It doesn't matter what you make in smithing because it raises the bar all the same. A suit of daedric armor doesn't give you any more or any less experience with the skill than a measly iron dagger. Which is a good way to level quickly: spam iron daggers. You only need one iron ingot and one set of leather strips to make them. It took my brand new character roughly two hours to get to level 100 smithing using this style. Sounds cheap, I know, but you'll never get to that level if you just do a little here and there. 2) Whether you join the Empire or the Stormcloaks doesn't really matter that much, I personally join the Empire every time because you eventually learn 'something' about Ulfric Stormcloak that will make you hate him fiercely. Depending on how much you hate those snotty Thalmor, of course. Personally I think the Empire winning the fight is what's probably going to be canon, but it's really all up to you. I'd still play through both at least once so you can see both sides. A side note though, play through the whole main quest before you decide to choose a side. There's one quest in particular that's VERY lulzy and worth it in the long run, which you'll end up skipping if one side already owns Skyrim. 3) Get married as soon as you can, because your spouse will open up a store (or at least they say they will, you never actually see them working there or anywhere) and every day you can get like 100 gold by asking them if the store made any money. It's not much but it does help out in a pinch sometimes. And it stacks, so you can wait for a week and then go back and get 700 gold from them. Not bad, amirite? 4) Dragon Priests will fuck your shit up, being overleveled level 50 fucktards. But the burial masks you get from them are almost entirely worth the risk, and they look pretty cool too. Go hunt 'em down. Have any more questions then post 'em here and I'll get back to ya.

Thanks, Ace!
How long can I stay neutral between the two warring factions? My plan is to get Lydia just to have some kind of human shield, so I'll do up to that part then probably take a break from the main quest and go exploring (I made it from Winterhold to Dawnstar to a town West of that one, then North to Solitude. Now I'm back at Whiterun). I'll try and finish the College quest line after getting Lydia.
What's a good weapon for my new character? Right now I'm using a steel mace or something. Oh, and, uh, how do I get my magic skill up?
Oh, and when do dragons begin to appear throughout the world?
Edit: Is the college dorm safe for storage?

There's a much better companion in Dawnstar that you can get. Or you can choose to get a pretty good staff instead, seeing how you're going the mage route. If you want you're magic to go up, then keep using your spells. Each type of spell gains you experience in it's respective filled. Staffs also factor into this depending on their type. Dragons start to appear after the 7th main quest "A Blade in the Dark." The dorms are not safe to store items. The only safe containers are those located in houses you purchase. I personally join the Empire every time because you eventually learn 'something' about Ulfric Stormcloak that will make you hate him fiercely. Please explain.

Steel is a worthy, reliable type of weapon, one that you'll probably be stuck with for quite some time at your level and even longer than that if you're like me and rarely change weapons. The next upgrades for you are Elven (if you're going for a lighter armored character) or Dwarven (For heavier characters). Dwarven deals more damage than Elven I believe, I just used Elven because it looks prettier than some fugly ass golden sword that someone would see a mile away. As for Ulfric, I'm hiding that under a spoilers tab so Aussie dun see it and bitch and me. Anyway, it's really just a perspective thing, in all honesty. Like I said, you have to hate the Thalmor like I do for it to really affect you. Anyway, during the Great War between the Empire and the Aldmeri Dominion, Ulfric was captured by Elenwen, the current ambassador to Skyrim. To make a long story short, he was tortured and finally cracked. They led him to believe that the information he gave him was used in the sack of the Imperial City, but allowed him to go free and live in exchange for one thing: once he returned to Skyrim, he was to start a rebellion there to weaken the Empire from within so as to make it easier on the Aldmeri Dominion to conquer it. And thus the Stormcloak Rebellion was born not long after the Markarth Incident, which was orchestrated by the Thalmor so Ulfric could step into the limelight. He led a Nord militia and liberated it from the Forsworn with the power of the Thu'um, being labeled both a hero and an opportunist by various citizens. After this he had just enough fame to be put on the throne in Windhelm. He started throwing fits about the ban of Talos worship, evil Thalmor this, evil Empire that, blah blah blah you know all that shite already. The whole of it? Ulfric is nothing more than a pawn of the Thalmor. You find something very interesting on him in the Thalmor Embassy in Skyrim, namely a dossier on him, in Elenwen's Solar. But if you don't believe that, read this: www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Thalmor_Dossier:_Ulfric_StormcloakAnd there you have it. Ulfric is a traitor to his own people and his 'Skyrim for Nords only' and 'death or glory' nonsense is just that, nonsense, because he works for the Aldmeri Dominion and is likely willing to sacrifice thousands of human lives just to please the High Elves by weakening the Empire, even slightly. Fiction or not, that kind of treachery just personally leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Sorry for the rant there, it's quite long. But I hope you can understand why Ulfric Stormcloak is not, in my opinion, the best man for the job, so to speak. Also Aussie (since Calis didn't answer this part of your post), you can stay neutral in the conflict as long as you want (even complete every guild and side quest you want, those guys literally aren't going anywhere), but to get the full experience with the game you'll eventually have to pick a side.

I just thought Ulfric was an asshole in general. I mean seriously. The Jarl of Whiterun is a fuckin' boss who gives you a free house and Ulfric makes you kill him. Sure it's a shitty house and it's riddled with AIDS, but Balgruuf is a Nord master race type with perfectly braided golden hair and shit.
I think Ulfric attacked Whiterun because he was jealous of Balgruuf's epic mane.

Okay, good news! I have Whatsherface, I did the two quests to buy the manor, and I have five thousand gold stockpiled.
So I went off of Ace's money making tip about enchanting, and googled more and someone said to use iron daggers and enchant them with banish. You get 1,400 to 1,900 gold per one, which will help.
But, uh, just to save time, how do I enchant an item with banish? Yeah...yeah, I'm a real noob.

Find a weapon with Banish on it. Disenchant that at an arcane enchanter, this will let you learn the enchantment.
Combine the iron dagger, with the chosen enchantment and a filled soul gem at the arcane enchanter.

Because souls are what power enchantments in the Elder Scrolls universe, it was no different in any of the other games. You can also use them to either put an enchantment on an item or recharge an already existing enchantment. Basically, no filled soul gems, no enchantments.
But buying shitloads of soul gems that just break immediately after you use them is a waste of time in my opinion. You've already been to Winterhold, so you're not too far away from the Shrine of Azura. Go there and you'll do a quest for her, then when you complete it you'll get Azura's Star, which is a reusable soul gem that never breaks.
Well, you'll get Azura's Star if you bring the star back to Azura, anyway. I find that it's much better to bring it back to this High Elf mage in Winterhold (I think his name is Nelacar or something. You can get the quest from him too, I believe. He lives in the inn there). He'll fix it after you finish the last bit of the quest and you'll get the Black Star, a reusable black soul gem that holds human/elven/khajiit/what the fuck ever souls.
I'm only telling you this so you can figure out what you want, because the game doesn't exactly tell you for sure. With Azura's Star you can trap 'white souls', animals and the like but nothing else, which sort of sucks. With the Black Star you can trap, well, 'black souls', which are what I mentioned above.
The Black Star is the way to go if you're going to be enchanting a lot. It's funny really, the soul of a shitty bandit or peasant in the street is considered a 'Greater Soul'. The bigger the soul is the better the enchantment will be, and thus the price will be higher as well when you sell it.
Also, you will need the spell Soul Trap beforehand if you don't already have it, for obvious reasons. I know for a fact the Jarl's court wizard in Whiterun sells it, but you can find it pretty much anywhere someone sells spells at.

OHAI AUSSIE.
Just a tip for ya. I'm just starting out in Skyrim too, and I'm only level 45. Can you believe that?
So there I was, wandering this place northwest of Solitude, when I saw this pinga stone on the compass. It's somewhere in the mouhtains, and it's. Uh, I think right before Wolfskill Cave and somewhere near Thalmor Emissary. It didn't show up on map when I read about the stones, and blah blah. But you'll find it worth the trip. Why?
The Steed Stone. Why level up with other shitty stones when other people level up with you? Get this Steed Stone and you'll get a hundred pound bonus to your carrying weight. You'd grow a third leg that lets you carry a LOT more phat loot. And you can sprint forever before running out of breath, so you won't have to waste money on an actual horse.
Also, I found a boot of Carrying Weight. Adds like, 50 or 100 more to my carrying weight. You should enchant your stuff to make you enchant better, then enchant carrying weight on a boot or something.
Srsly, you won't regret all the extra carrying space. MORE LOOT TO GO AROUND.

Speaking of which, besides the quest dragon, I've fought three of the bastards so far. One on the road north-west from Solitude, one near some giant's camp going from Riverwood to Winterhold and one North of Riften. I've only been playing for a few hours.

So I'm about to go exploring in Alftand. I have the...magic...orb...stone....things from that cave dwelling wizard, but I might put off seeing Blackreach for now. I'm level 13 and am not currently up to the main quest where you go through this place, but it shouldn't be a problem, right? I really just planned on taking the elevator back up to the surface once I'm at the end, instead of going into Blackreach.
