Thunder booms loudly overhead as dark storm clouds cover up the night sky, extinguishing all sources of light for the ruined city below. Heavy rain continues its relentless assault upon the streets and buildings; the rain had yet to stop for three days and nights, making the city a dreary place to be trapped within.
A haggard individual looking no worse for wear stumbles down one of the streets, completely soaked by the rain. Upon closer inspection, the individual appears to be wounded, his blood running down his left arm from a deep gash in the shoulder. His right arm grasps the wound tightly, attempting to stop the blood flowing forth as he continues to stumble over the wet pavement, almost falling down several times.
Finally unable to take it anymore, our protagonist finally collapses against a streetlight, breathing heavily as he looks up at the night sky. His heart thumps loudly, the sound of it filling his ears as he tries to rest for a moment.
Nuclear war had finally torn the entire Earth to pieces in the year 2021, turning a vast amount of countries into nothing but smoldering ruins. The United States had, surprisingly enough, been the forerunner of the apocalypse. The country had become the most advanced in scientific weaponry about 2020, but it was in fact the division of the country into East and West that caused the real problems.
Two conflicting views of things had emerged about that time. The East had seen the horrors that the powerful weaponry they had created wreaked upon the environment. They sought to preserve the whole of nature itself, by force if necessary. The West, however, saw the potential the superweapons held. They realized that America would become the most powerful nation in the world with these weapons backing its exceptionally strong military. This disagreement would eventually end with the complete division of the country in the year 2021.
The two sides would finally come to blows in the year 2030. After five years of conflict, Western President John Kougan would order the nuclear weaponry to be launched, both at the Eastern States and at the enemies of America themselves. This prompted retaliation, which ended in the annihilation of much of the world.
Radiation, however, was the least of the people's worries. It didn't linger above the surface as most would think. One of the experiments the West had been toying with was launched into the east during the war. Originally intended to be a blow to the East's morale, this chemical was supposed to destroy all forms of nature within a wide berth. However, instead of doing what it was intended to do, the chemical was absorbed by the Earth. It remained mostly ignored by those that survived the destruction, appearing to be merely an epidemic of the common cold. Refugees who had lost everything would be deported to other parts of the world as the rebuilding process began in the year 2028.
Soon enough, however, the effects of the chemicals began showing their true colors. The chemicals infected the corpses of those recently departed, turning them into cannibals... Zombies. Those that were infected while still alive, however, were far worse off. The mixture of harsh chemicals warped their DNA, turning them into various types of terrible creatures.
Those infected by it soon overran most of the world, turning the destroyed countries into little more than ghost towns. By the year 2050, there was only an estimated one million people left alive on the face of the Earth. Those both lucky and unlucky enough to survive the wars and become immune to the diseases now lead a harsh struggle to stay alive, surrounded constantly on all sides by undead humans and nightmarish creatures.
Loud shrieks pierce the sky, causing the individual to jump as his eyes scan the rooftops warily. The creatures that had been pursuing him had returned... Gods, it was as if they could smell his blood and fear!
Dragging himself to his feet, he begins stumbling down the street once again, desperately seeking a way to lose his pursuers. Time was beginning to run out. He didn't have much strength left...
------
A) Dart into the nearest building, it's the most obvious possibility.
B) Attempt to smash the window of a nearby parked car and hide there, the sound may attract unwanted attention but it's certainly better than nothing.
C) Get creative and hide in a trashcan or a dumpster. Also an obvious possibility, though he may smell horrible afterwards.
D) The creatures were following him from the rooftops beforehand... Perhaps the shadows of the dark alleys will serve to help him lose his pursuers.
Also decide on this: shall this cyoa be written from the YOU-perspective or shall a protagonist character be created for it? And shall the protagonist be male or female? I obscured the gender of the individual as much as possible for this reason.
