This is pretty out of the blue, but the title is exactly what it says. What if the Willamette Parkview Mall were aboard the Ishimura, which is a luxury liner instead of a mining vessel? This story is entirely for the hell of it and just for fun so expect don't expect much in the way of realism. Not much else to tell here, we just need to see how the story goes:
"Just about....finished." Simon gently slid the new power module for the first sector of the shopping mall into place, its volatile power core flashing a brilliant shade of violet all the while. His Standard Engineer RIG appeared almost blue in the soft light of the module; the actually green garb slightly torn from previous wear along the front. He released the object from the hold of his Kinesis module, standard issue supplied to all Engineers aboard the USG Ishimura. The Ishimura was a Titanic class Cruise vessel that toured the controlled space for the pleasure of its guests. It was originally slated to be a Planet-Cracker mining vessel, but corporate meddling thought there was more money to be made in commercial marketing. Not that it mattered either way to Simon Gabriels, he was merely an engineer who enjoyed his work.
The power core was located in an isolated area near the edge sector, entrance prohibited to all but authorized personnel. "Looks we're clear across the board. Good work, Simon." A familiar voice echoed inside his ear. "Alright, mission accomplished. But that's the third module we've had to replace this week in this sector. What's the deal?" Simon asked as the helmet of his RIG collapsed to expose his head.
Simon's hair was short and mottled, a dark brown color signifying his still relative youth. A small amount of stubble lined his jaw, connected to either side of his head by matching sideburns. Simon was a handsome man to be sure, but he didn't really dwell on his looks. He was more focused on intellectual pursuits than anything else, having a particular affinity for anything and everything Engineering. His eyes were solid green, giving a rather piercing gaze when the situation called for it.
"I wish I knew. Security says its been due to "faulty equipment", but you and I both know that's bullshit." Cynthia quipped from across the sector. Cynthia Velasquez was Simon's partner in crime, helping him out since their first day on the vessel. She normally operated from a more central location on the ship, relaying the various operational knowledge required of Engineers, such as power readings, temperature levels, etc. In contrast to the more geeky and introverted Simon, Cynthia was a beautiful Hispanic woman who was very outgoing and loved to socialize. Whenever he thought about it, Simon was actually amazed she wound in the same field as him. Normally women of her stature were more glamorous with their careers. That never stopped Cynthia from performing grease monkey duties almost as well as Simon although she preferred the more office like assignment of the pair.
He could almost hear Cynthia forming the air quotes around her faulty equipment statement, chuckling under his breath while exiting the stifling heat of the power room. "Whatever, we get paid the same either way." Simon cracked his knuckles as the neon lights of the Paradise sector flared all around him. There were too many shops to keep track of sometimes in Simon's mind, especially given his preference for avoiding such areas of the Ishimura. He was more at home in the smaller, more quaint sectors of the ship.
"Readings still good. I guess we're in the clear. We actually finished ahead of schedule for once, this must be our lucky day." Cynthia chimed as Simon secured the maintenance door behind him. "Seriously? Looks like I need to bring you along more often." Cynthia's colorful laugh filled Simon's ears, a delight to hear anytime. She only accompanied him out into the field this time because of the repeated actions needed in the sector. They were required to run additional tests that necessitated Cynthia's physical presence at a console across the area.
"Wait, I may have spoken too soon. Can I get you head over here to Jill's Sandwiches help me check on something? These readings have suddenly spiked all over the place." Cynthia requested of Simon. "Yeah, I guess. Just give me a sec. I left my plasma cutter in the power room." Simon quickly muted Cynthia for the moment, she always had a quick retort for his bouts of forgetfulness. He flashed his palm across the door's display, authorizing his entrance with the RIG's built in systems. Gears grind and thud as the door opened, revealing his cutter on the floor beneath the power core. Ugh, can't believe I forgot it again. Cynthia would swear I'd lose my head if it wasn't attached.
A quick sprint across the small area and his Plasma Cutter was in hand, but there was something...different about the cramped space than before. It suddenly seemed a few degrees warmer, not a good sign at all in Simon's mind. He stuck out his arm to check the air flow of a nearby vent but almost leapt out of his suit after a quick thud emanated from behind the grate. "What the fuck?!" He swore aloud, wondering what could possibly be skittering around the vents. It was extremely dangerous for human life to navigate any passages not constructed specifically for maintenance personnel, let alone something to move as quickly as what he saw. As far as he knew, all the animals on the ship were confined to the science laboratories on the other end of the vessel as well. Maybe something got out?
With plasma cutter in hand, he was poised to investigate when an angry voice shot into his ear, "Simon Gabriels! What have I said about muting me? You didn't even hear me mention the new assignment, did you?" Cynthia's tone was absolutely livid, but Simon's curiosity was piqued by the vent. Should he take the time to investigate or respond before Cynthia erupted again?
Simon Gabriels
RIG: 100%
Stamina: 100%
Entourage: Nobody
Inventory: Plasma Cutter, Kinesis Module, Standard Engineering Suit
A) Go ahead and check the vent, Simon has to know what might be in there or else it will drive him mad.
B) Ignore the vent and reply to Cynthia, Simon's ears still occasionally ring from the last time she chewed him out for muting her.
So for quick reference, the layout of the shopping area of the Ishimura will be a combination of Willamette Parkview Mall and Fortune City from Dead Rising 2. The area Simon's in right now is pretty much a futuristic version of Paradise Plaza so you can refer to it for the general layout before I get a full description down. Also, these might seem like fairly innocuous choices, but they will determine Simon's starting path in the story.
For another reference, this is pretty much Simon's current suit, just in better condition:
