Character Name: Riley Christoph
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Birthplace: Ontario, Canada
Race (Human, Vampire, etc.): Human, Reaper Contracted
Physical Appearance (Photo or description):
Pretty much the above, but the blond is also black. About the only time Riley had her hair dyed was that one time in tenth grade...
Her style could be described as somewhere between grunge and hipster, but Riley doesn't really label how she dresses. Just says it's 'super cool' and 'rebellious'.
Good, Evil, or Neutral: Good
Strengths:
Riley has basic knowledge of how to use a pistol and shotgun, with basic knowledge of a rifle, because unlike Emily, she took to her father's gun collection and he would take her to the gun range to practice shooting.
While not gifted with card reading like Emily or especially sensitive, Riley does know basic crafted charms such as protective bracelets and talismans to hang in homes. While her sensitivity does improve upon being inducted into a contract, Riley is still only knowledgeable in basic charms unless instructed by Emily or someone else.
She is more durable while under a contract with a reaper, able to take more damage and punishment with her body before pain tells her to stop.
Weaknesses:
Her new reaper powers are awesome, but Riley is often overwhelmed with both her task, and also the usage of them. It takes time for humans to become used to the drain it inflicts upon them as a whole. She often feels guilt at her ability to still be alive, knowing it is merely temporary, that one day she will die again when her debt has been paid.
Riley will often try to push herself beyond what her body tells her is okay, insisting she can take it. This is especially prevalent if her sister is in danger. This often leads to her contracted reaper, Karis, forcefully removing her from the situation depending upon the severity, or, at times, allowing her to go through it with so she can deal with the consequences later as a lesson.
Despite her somewhat more durable frame, she will still be forced to retreat or fall back after a decent amount of punishment. But as it has been previously stated, Riley does not always follow her body's queues.
Weapon Of Choice (Within reason): Pistol, Reaper skills (very limited.)
Abilities (A short summary of your character's supernatural talents, if applicable):
Riley meets with an unfortunate accident shortly after the story begins that leaves her quite dead. When a reaper comes to take her soul, her sister Emily interferes with the reaping. Something goes terribly wrong with the process as a result, and Riley's soul ends up trapped between the afterlife and the world of the living. While this brings her new abilities, it also brings consequences, as a the reaper in charge of taking her to her rest must now oversee her new duties to help the reapers solve the mystery of what is happening in Chasm (as there are many higher powers concerned about the growing anomaly taking place), as well as assist with reapings and wayward souls. Once her task is complete, her soul can properly go to its rest.
After her accident, Riley can discern whether a person on the street is of supernatural origin, dead or a regular human being; only more powerful beings would be able to escape this sight, but masking their presence or identity with their abilities or magic can cloud it and make it difficult for her to identify them. She is able to help wayward, restless and suffering spirits find peace by guiding their souls to the afterlife. She is not as as strong as a reaper, having to use an actual prayer or ceremony to send a soul rather than a mere wave of a hand or scythe.
She gained the most basic of powers when she became tied to a reaper, melding into the shadows and using them to travel silently to other destinations. But this drains her greatly, as she has not had the years or decades that reapers tend to have to master this.
Depending the caliber of supernatural, they can sense Riley's life state. Those of angelic or otherwise heavenly origin can easily identify a soul that is under contract with a reaper, but most of the time, nothing can be done about it. While most supernaturals could really care less about anyone who stinks of a reaper, as many tend to steer clear of their ilk simply because of the power they wield, some approach those bound to them in an attempt to manipulate or influence them.
Riley is still vulnerable in her human body, if slightly more durable, but a shot to the head could effectively end her if Karis is not there to tend to her. A severing of her connection with her contracted reaper could have disastrous effects on her health, however temporary. It can start out minor, such has sickness similar to a cold and developing into a fever, but soon she will start to lose all semblance of life the longer she is without it. This would be if she were in a safe environment; in a dangerous one, her disorientation and sudden weakness is an open invitation to end her life.
Personality:
Riley is the sunshine to the world, or so a lot of people who know her say. She talks fast, but can just as easily be tripped up by her own tongue or someone else's words, but most of the time she'll just smile and laugh it off. While she has a rebellious streak a mile wide, the most you'd see of her rebellion would be some jaywalking, illicit underage procurement of alcohol for shenanigans, and her 'super hardcore' dress style. The biggest spot of rebellion is her mouth, and how often she'll open it to talk when sometimes she really shouldn't.
History:
Her story is much the same as Emily's familial wise, buy Riley spends her time making a nuisance of herself working at the local greasy spoon diner. Being one year younger than Emily, she is commonly at her sister's heels, but neither of them really mind this. Often times it's hard to tell if Riley and Emily are siblings or best friends, given how close they have been the entirety of their lives, and with Riley constantly stealing Emily's clothing, sometimes one could be mistaken for the other until they turned around.
Riley didn't really have a plan like Emily did coming out of high school. At first she had thought of going to the local university to try and see if something would spark her fancy, but before graduation had even come, she had already made up her mind that that would be a huge waste of her time and finances. Her parents had been reasonable enough to let her stay in the house as long as she held a job, and she'd already had hers before she graduated.
Growing up, Riley liked to paint and draw; her room was covered in filled sketchbooks, drawings on the wall, quotes by famous painters written in marker on the baseboards and a few paintings filling the spaces that weren't taken up by posters. But every time she tried to think about pursuing it as a career, she would become terrified of failure. Her self-confidence would plummet and she would assure herself that she was fine with just doing it as a hobby, even as friends and family around her kept encouraging her to sell her artwork online or take courses at the college.
Emily was one of the loudest voices trying to break through her anxiety. Many times, she almost made it through, but Riley would pull away at the last second. But Emily was never angry, she would only smile and say that she'd convince her one day.
