Character Name: Karis
Age: Early 20s (Appearance), Actual age unknown
Gender: Male
Birthplace: Nether Realms
Race (Human, Vampire, etc.): Reaper
Physical Appearance (Photo or description):
Reaper form. Really, Reapers may also appear as a stereotypical skeleton or a gaunt figure, but humans sometimes don't take well to that. He could easily walk around in this form, as he would appear to merely be a heavily tattooed human, but it would also cause him to be a bit of a beacon, as he would not be suppressing his own powers, making him easier for others to sense.
Human disguise.
Karis constantly looks particularly placid, not quite there, but you can see in his eyes that he is watching everything around him very carefully. Most of the time there is semi-dark coloring beneath his eyes, as if he has not gotten enough sleep, but he is always perfectly alert, so it is a mystery on whether this is aesthetic for his manifested form or not. It can also be speculated that he's simply tired or drained from keeping up an appearance.
Good, Evil, or Neutral: Neutral
Strengths: Resting bitch face, if you can consider that a strength. But in all seriousness, it's hard to phase Karis. When you come from the afterlife, you've seen some shit, and things that would make anyone else blanch, Karis takes in stride. Not requiring food and a minimal amount of rest is also a plus.
Weaknesses: A large weakness of Reapers is their strict adherence to the rules. Dire consequences for disobedience mean that it is rare for a Reaper to step out of line. Physically, Reapers are affected by holier/light magic or items blessed with such, despite being a neutral faction. An explanation could be that light magic, and even holy magic (Angels) has roots in their opposing element, life. A blessed weapon or holy water infused weapon could also be used.
Weapon Of Choice (Within reason): Reaper scythe, powers (with limitations)
Abilities (A short summary of your character's supernatural talents, if applicable):
First and foremost, the most obvious ability of a Reaper is the ability to separate souls from their mortal bodies, but it's highly frowned upon to simply do this as they please, but luckily only incredibly powerful Reapers can do this easily, and even then, they have the restraint and common sense to not blindly snuff out human lives. Reapers suffer consequences for ending lives meaninglessly, so only the truly reckless would attempt to go against it.
Shadow travel is the second power Reapers are most known for, but only by other Supernaturals, and only those that are knowledgeable in them or have witnessed it. They use this power to meld into the shadows themselves and quickly move from one location to another.
A Reaper's eyes are special; if a human's life is nearing its end, the human is surrounded by a specific aura that they can pick up on. Only the Grim Reaper himself can see every single minute, hour and second a human will be alive.
Reapers by nature are beings of death. Unless their powers are kept in check, living things around them will begin to die when they are angered. Flowers will wither, grass will turn brown, trees will crack and leaves will fall from branches, etc. An angry Reaper can even unintentionally hurt a living being by touching them.
Personality:
Karis is often blunt, and may not always be considerate of feelings in a situation, even if he is aware of what it may evoke, but other times he may just be genuinely confused. It's not that he has no empathy, or is unable to be kind; Karis' default response to most situations is naturally being blunt or soft spoken, because nobody really asks a Reaper about the weather much and other such small talk. But sarcasm is also possible if the day is right.
History:
Karis doesn't like to give his history. Not because it's boring, oh no. Not everyone can say they are the son of the ferryman Charon. It's just the notoriety and the expectations that come with it. From his youngest, earliest memories, Karis has been expected to flourish and thrive, succeed and conquer.
Now as it's been said, Karis is a Reaper. He's also very good at this job. Riley Christoph was supposed to be just another reaping, one that's a bit sadder than the others, because nobody likes an unexpected death, not even Reapers. But as Karis was bringing his scythe down, a crazy woman dove at him and interfered with the reaping. That's...when things went sideways. With the reaping only half-way complete, Riley's soul was stuck halfway in the afterlife. Reapers take pride in their work, and to have a job left undone or failed, especially if your assignment were to wither from their soul not even making it to the afterlife due to an incomplete Reaping...it would be a complete embarrassment to the Reaper in question. To understand Karis' predicament in Chasm, there will need to be a bit of an explanation on the protocol on just what happens when a soul doesn't quite make it to the afterlife.
There are contingencies for such cases, regardless of how assignments end up halfway between life and death. Some try to buy their way into the afterlife (or back to life) if they happen to be rich, but many are merely confused or terrified at even being dead in the first place. But Reapers don't really need money (and even those who operate in the human world have plenty of it to begin with), thus humans who find themselves set between life and death fall into several categories, depending on how they came to be that way. If it was a fault of the Reaper, the soul is sent on to wherever they were meant to be. But if the soul's predicament was caused by their own actions, or the actions of one close to them, they must work for their right to enter the afterlife.
The Reaper and human enter a contract, bringing the human temporarily back to the mortal plane and gifting them with a minor set of skills from their connection. The human is then tasked to help the Reaper in any reapings, but also must help any stray or suffering souls and send them on their way. Once their debt is paid, the Reaper escorts their charge to the afterlife where they can continue their journey.
This is what happens to Riley, after her older sister Emily interferes with Karis reaping her soul. The Reapers had been curiously watching Chasm for some time, almost with a nervous curiosity at the strange energy that seemed to be building in the streets. With Emily's interference, and Riley's new status as Reaper Contracted, Karis is given the additional task to monitor Chasm, looking for the source of the worrying energy.
