Nicole being the closer of the two, John lends her aid as Cynthia dangles below. She'll be able to pull herself up, I have faith in her. Nicole, on the other hand, has no way to escape and no weapon to defend herself. He dives in through the window rather dramatically, though it is enough to capture the attention of at least one of the undead assailants. "Fresh meat here boys! I guarantee I'll fill you up more than she will." John taunts unnecessarily, he doubts they can even understand him. The act is more to bolster his own dwindling confidence as he may have misjudged the size of the zombies outside. One of them stands at a hulking 6'5", its arms bulging with muscles that still have yet to begin detiorating. Its shirt hangs in tatters from its oppositely rotting torso as well as pants that would seem suitable for the Incredible Hulk. "Easy there big guy. Let's take this nice and WHOA!" John evades its lunge by rolling to the side, stumbling on his way back up. The zombie easily covers the distance with its loping gait, a massive fist crashing down less than a foot from John once he reaches him. The floor splinters upon being struck yet the zombie doesn't relent. John clambers to his feet and counters with a kick to the groin. It fails to even faze the zombie, who returns the favor by tackling him to the ground. As this happens, Nicole evades its partner in crime, whose physique is the polar opposite. Its folds of fat hinder its turning speed, allowing her to escape out the window within a matter of moments. "Help Cynthia on the lower floor! She's barely hanging on." John calls as he watches her flee, praying that she'll reach the latina in time. He has his own matters to attend to now, namely the hulk positioned atop him. Instead of battering him as a normal person would, the zombie goes straight for his throat. John grabs its head and pushes it back, buying himself only a little more time. It moans impatiently then attacks with much more force. All he can do to defend is bar his face with his arms as the zombie's teeth make contact with his flesh. It rips a large portion of his forearm skin off with one bite. While muching on the delicious flesh, John capitalizes on its momentary distraction by sliding under its legs and retreating the same way Nicole did. He touches the tender area of the bite and curses as blood flows over his fingers. God damn that stings. It should be all right though, the bastard didn't bite that deep.Once outside, John looks around for Nicole and Cynthia. "There you are!" By some twist of fate, She was able to hoist the latina up from certain doom. It seems this came at a price though. "I sprained my ankle when I fell over the edge. That damn zombie..." Cynthia gasps in pain after trying to step forward, nearly falling over if not for Nicole's support. "She can't walk by herself like this. And I managed to find Isabela, that's how I lost the shiv. The zombie was dragging her up through that room, but when I tried to help her, I was attacked by those two. There was a third in the room but it went for Cynthia when it saw her." Nicole explains while noting the bite on John's arm. "Are you okay? You were bitten." She asks curiously. "I'm fine, it's just a scratch. We should be worried about Isabela now. We need to reach her but we also need to do something about your leg." John notes. "I'm fine, you can leave me here." She replies. "That wouldn't be smart. Did you forget about our friends in there?" He points to the two zombies still within the room, they dimly search for the trio but find nothing in their vicinity. "They won't know I'm here. You see how stupid they are. Now get going." She reassures him, ushering them to proceed ahead. Nicole is skeptical about her reassurance though. "Nicole, give Cynthia a hand. She's coming with us whether she likes it or not." John says, his conscience finally getting the better of him. "But-" He flashes her a stern glare that will accept no rebuttals. "We're not leaving you here to die. No more arguments."
"Come on, on your feet." Nicole gently shifts her weight to accommodate her companion. Cynthia locks her gaze at the ground, feeling like nothing more than a burden to the others.
"Let's go find Isabela." John reenters the hostile room, intent on the situation unfolding differently this time. The hulking zombie does not hesitate to attack, romping toward John with a primitive grudge. He ducks the first swipe of its hand, digging his shoulder into its torso afterward. He does not relent, charging at the zombie with his shoulder three more consecutive times.
Its chest cavity collapses with one last collision, the decay of its body the instrument of its final death. John rubs his now sore shoulder, he'll have to be careful not to seriously injure himself. Nicole and Cynthia easily juke the obese zombie's bum rush, the two of them more agile even after one has been injured. The zombie trips over its own feet, rolling in a humorous fashion toward the wall.
With the two threats incapacitated, John signals the two to follow. After exiting, they emerge in an annex of rooms. "Isabela could be in any one of them!" Cynthia gasps urgently. "I know. Just be quiet, we should be ale to hear her." John calms her for the moment and listens intently to his surroundings. A faint thump emits from a room in the corner, urging John to investigate.
He jolts toward the room and busts in the door with a momentum driven kick. Within, Isabela is finishing off a zombie by driving her heel into its skull, nary a scratch on the woman. Damn, I gotta remind myself not to piss her off.
"It took you long enough. I'm lucky it decided to wander into such an enclosed space." Isabela simply shrugs after, leaving a baffled John behind to join her cousin and Nicole. John can only do the same.
"....really now? Okay. We should take a moment to rest here then proceed toward the roof. The fire is still raging below." John catches Isabela state once joining them. Once everyone is in agreement, they disperse to have a moment to themselves.
John, though, does not feel at ease. In fact it is much the opposite. Something's about to happen. Something bad.

Here's where it gets a bit troublesome, someone is going to die here if the correct person is not chosen.
A) Take a moment to speak with Isabela as she scans the area, it wouldn't hurt to confirm the current plan
B) Speak with Cynthia, she has taken a seat under a vent and looks to be depressed
C) Check on Nicole, she is gazing out a window rather longingly

Cynthia's starting to consider herself a burden. Let's see if we can't anything to rememdy that. "How are you doing, Cynthia?" John asks after having come to a decision on who to speak with. "I really don't know. For the most part, I guess I'm okay. I just wish I hadn't twisted my damn ankle." She rubs the swollen portion of her foot, muttering what John believes to be curses under her breath all the while.
"Just to let you know, it's not your fault. You reacted like any person concerned for their family would. We can't fault you for that, and Isabela's lucky to have a cousin who cares so much. Hell, you may have acted rashly, but it's actually more than an average person would've done. Most people would've been cowards and left their family to die but not you. No, you threw aside your fear and chased after her despite the fact you were unarmed." John's reassurance speech, however brief, seems to have a visible affect on Cynthia.
"Thank you. That's very kind of you to say, but it still doesn't change the fact th-" She is abruptly interrupted midsentence by the shattering of glass. "Aaagh!" Nicole screams as a pair of clawed feet grab her shoulders, seeking to whisk her away. She grasps the windowsill in an attempt to halt her abuction, grunting from the sudden exertion.
"Isabela, grab her legs! We're not losing another one." John wraps both arms around her thighs while Isabela takes hold of her shins. The body the talons are attached to isn't visible due to poor lighting, but John can hear the beating of its mighty wings. "Oh god oh god! Please don't let go..." Nicole cries frantically, pure terror creeping its way into her voice.
Cynthia watches helplessly as they struggle to prevent the loss of Nicole. John plants his feet, the soles of his shoes scraping the wooden floor as they slide forward slowly. "We're losing her." Isabela needlessly remarks, frustrating John even more. "We won't lose her! Pull harder!"
Try as they might, the creature simply proves too strong. It gives a powerful yank and a hefty flap of its wings, sealing its victory. Nicole is ripped right out of her jeans, uttering a final cry as the creature carries her away into the night.
John squeezes the pants tightly then drops them, there's nothing more he can do. "Damn it all!" Despite this knowledge, he punches the wall so hard that blood trickles down from his knuckles. "Stop. We don't need you injuring yourself while we still have to escape. We can mourn her loss later, we have to keep moving." Isabela's words are cold yet realistic, they have to escape now.
"Alright, Cynthia come on. We need to move fast so I'll carry you the rest of the way." John doesn't allow her to object, lifting her onto his back as Isabela shoots him a gaze of admiration for coming to his senses. That and the fact that I'm not leaving her cousin behind to rot. Cynthia could just prove to be my ace in the hole.....
Leaving behind the site of yet another loss, they proceed to the roof by way of a flight of stairs. Once on said roof, they witness just how far the extent of the outbreak has gone. Though it is night time, the full moon casts an eerie light on the sight of the city's chaos. Buildings are burning in the distance and people are still scampering through the streets, seeking to reach safety wherever it may be.
Bodies litter the ground along with the shambling figures of the undead, they seeking to feast on the few living who remain. "It's like hell on Earth..." Cynthia observes grimly, shifting to make herself slightly more comfortable. "Is this better?" John arches his back then straightens it, allowing her to sit more firmly in his arms. "Much, thank you." She smiles at his small act of kindness while Isabela picks out their next destination.
"There. The area around the police station is empy and there are a few lights on, that has to mean there are at least a few survivors there." She tells them while leaning over the burning building. "Looks like we're heading there. Let's get going." They head down the fire escape and exit to the street below.
They are faced with a new dilemma now, actually reaching the station.
Vitality: 83%, Zombie bite stable for now Inventory: Car keys, Cell phone Entourage: Nicole Lynx: LOST Cynthia Velasquez: 45%, Sprained ankle Isabela Keyes: 85%
A) Stay on the street, it's the quickest way even though the most zombies populate it
B) Look for an alternate route, it will take longer and who knows what they'll find, but it will hopefully contain less zombies
C) Find another place to stop first, John should really inspect his bite before they find anymore people....
D) Attempt to get a vehicle started, it could take a while but it'd prove more safe in the long run

I"ve been thinking of different ways to change up the story and recently decided on a new feature I may implement. The use of a redo or 'what-if' scenario. The redo is obvious but the what-if is a bit more versatile. Basically, it entails what if a different action had been taken somewhere in the story? At this point in Distraction, it's most obviously in the first few. What if John hadn't followed the women in the first place? What if he had managed to rescue Cindy?
So I'm asking now: would anybody like to see a What If or Redo for this story? If so, at what point: The very beginning, the choice of who to first speak with in the restaurant (making it possible to rescue Cindy), or a later portion? At first it'd only serve as a slight Distraction, but who knows? If it goes well enough, it could end up replacing the current path.......

I would say a what if, so we have a completely different story.

Why not from the point where Cindy perished? The waitress deserves better, I choose a second chance from there.

Well, I think both would be cool, but overall, a redo could be better.

Though Cynthia is attempting to capture John's attention, he forgoes the promiscuous Latina in favor of the timid blonde waitress. "Hell of a thing, isn't it?" John says to the distracted woman. "What? Oh, sorry." Cindy stutters. She's going to make conversation difficult. Oh joy.
"I said it's a hell of a thing. This little predicament we're finding ourselves in. Mind I ask if anything besides the stiffs are on your mind?" He decides on a lighthearted approach, Cindy seems like she could use the humor anyway. "I-I huh........" She exhales deeply, seemingly debating on whether to answer his question or not.
"Well, I'm worried about what we're going to do from this point. You saw what those things did to armed soldiers, what hope do we have of making it out of here alive?!" Cindy's exclamation is made slightly more audible than she'd intended, garnering the attention of a lone figure outside the bar. Son of a bitch....
It hobbles to the window and begins rapping on the glass in steady increments, seemingly investigating the source of Cindy's outcry. "Don't make a sound, we'll just wait it out until it loses interest." John advises in hushed tones, maintaining a calm demeanor to keep the waitress calm.
Any hope of remaining incognito is quickly crushed by the zombie's next action. It bursts through the window without any warning, grasping Cindy's arm before she can react. "Whaaah! Get off!" She swats at its hand with her fist but to no avail. It begins to drag her toward its drooling maw as John intervenes. "Oh no you don't!" He dashes forward and plants his foot into the zombie's face, staggering it long enough for Cindy to free herself.
"It won't be long before its friends join in. We have to get out of here." John tells the others after retreating to the rear of the bar. "Where can we go though? The entire city's under siege now." Cynthia somberly remarks. "We'll worry about that when we come to it. Right now, we just need to get away from HERE." He replies sharply, glancing to the still staggered zombie in the window.
"We need to decide quickly then, more of them are already here!" Nicole motions to the window, where a steadily increasing throng of zombies approaches. "Cindy, you said you work here, what's the quickest way out of the building?" John asks, recalling her declaration shortly after arriving.
"Well, that door leads to the upper floors where we could access the fire escape or climb to the roof. The door behind the bar leads to the loading dock we share with the neighboring buildings, but it's locked and I don't have my key on me. It's upstairs in my locker, if go get it, we'd be able to access the dock and take a truck. They keep a truck on standby for the bakery next door." Cindy promptly replies. That truck would be our best bet for getting out of here, but we'd have to come back down here, the zombies might get through by then.
"Hurry and choose, they're nearly through the window." Isabela observes coolly, inching anxiously closer to her cousin.
Vitality: 100% Inventory: Car keys, Cell phone Entourage: Nicole Lynx: 100% Cindy Lennox: 100% Cynthia Velasquez: 100% Isablea Keyes: 100%
A) Search for Cindy's key, it's their best bet to escape B) Head to upstairs and then decide whether to flee down the fire escape or to the roof, it's too risky to chance the zombies breaking in by the time they retrieve the key
If you choose A, who goes with John to search for the key (Can be all or none of them, the people who remain behind will try to delay the zombies somehow) 1) Cindy 2) Nicole 3) Isabela 4) Cynthia
If you choose B, who will lead the way: 1) John 2) Cindy 3) Nicole 4) Isabela 5) Cynthia
